The next round of trade negotiations between the United States and Mexico has been postponed by one week and rescheduled for September 28–29 in Washington.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the talks were originally slated for the week of September 21, though the reason for the delay remains unclear. However, as Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to visit Washington that same week, senior U.S. officials may be occupied with hosting duties and meetings, making it difficult to carve out time for negotiations with Mexico.
This will be the fourth round of formal negotiations between the United States and Mexico regarding revisions to the USMCA; the U.S. is expected to demand that Mexico agree to sourcing requirements for AI devices, home appliances, and medical equipment, limiting the proportion of components originating from outside North America—particularly from China.
